It’s been over a year since I took on the fun project of building a custom NAS, and I’m excited to share how it’s been working out!
What I Love
- Perfect for Backing Up Photos & Important Files
I feel so much more organized knowing my photos and essential files are safely backed up! - Whisper-Quiet Operation
It’s practically silent while running, which is a huge plus for keeping things peaceful in the office when there are multiple devices running already. - Effortless Streaming with Plex
Streaming from the NAS using Plex has been a breeze. I can stream to all devices at home without a hitch—it’s like having my own little media hub! - Unraid Pro is Solid
Unraid has been a fantastic choice for a NAS OS, especially with the Pro version. (Though, of course, there’s a “less than perfect” side. More on that below!) - Hard Drive Reliability
So far, so good—no hard drive failures yet!
A Few Things I’d Tweak
- Filerun No Longer Free
Filerun isn’t free anymore, which means it’s no longer supported, so I miss the updates to the Filerun Docker setup. - File Transfer Could Be Easier
I was hoping for a simpler way to transfer files directly via USB. Sometimes, I just want the convenience of plugging in and moving things back and forth. - LAN IP Address Changes
If I switch routers or adjust the LAN settings, the NAS server’s IP changes, which means a lot of manual updates. Not my favorite task!
What’s Next
- Exploring New File Management Options
I’m on the lookout for a new app to replace Filerun for managing files more smoothly. - Direct USB File Transfers
I’d love to find a quick, easy way to transfer files directly to USB drives through the NAS.
All in all, it’s been a fun journey with plenty of learning along the way. Here’s to more improvements—and an even better NAS experience—coming up!
